KAYO was awarded DJ of The Year this weekend at the Music Nova Scotia Music & Industry Awards.
The Awards brunch was held at the end of Music Nova Scotia Music Week, which took place in Yarmouth this year from Nov 2-5.
Although a seasoned artist, KAYO is new to the DJ scene. It started for him during the COVID-19 pandemic when he started putting mixes together of his friends' music under the brand of Soulstice Radio.
"I was putting these mixes together in Logic Pro and putting them up on SoundCloud. I didn't know how to actually mix yet, but I would treat each mix, or 'episode', like a mini-album. Soulstice was originally a live showcase I would host, and COVID forced me into an environment where it had to evolve."
Coming out of the pandemic, it then evolved into a weekly Radio Show hosted by KAYO, Gen & Dwight Florent, where KAYO would not only DJ, but also interview other creatives alongside his co-hosts. The show aired every Thursday afternoon at 5pm on Blazin FM in its first year and every Saturday morning at 9am on The Wave in its second year.
All three hosts eventually went on to continue their travels outside of St Lucia once the pandemic subsided; forcing the platform to evolve even further. Soulstice Radio then became a podcast that KAYO would record wherever he was at in the world. The podcast would premiere on The Wave on Saturday mornings followed by its subsequent release to Streaming Platforms.
Thanks to the mentorship of Halifax DJ's Henry T, Kouz & Okay TK, KAYO eventually took the leap into becoming a live DJ.
KAYO was nominated for three awards:
R&B/Soul Recording of the Year
African Nova Scotian Artist of the Year
Dj of the Year
KAYO was also the closing performer at the Awards Brunch. He then performed that same night in Halifax as a surprise addition to Welkomunity Fest headlined by Afrobeats sensation, BNXN.
This is all fresh off the heels of his performance at the JUNO Wave Maker Tour on October 21 and winning the award for Artist of The Year at the 25th Annual ANSMA Awards on October 5.
Next, KAYO will be performing this Thursday, Nov 9, as part of the TD Music Connected Series alongside Kardinal Offishall, Haviah Mighty and Jah'Mila at the Marquee Ballroom.
Free Tickets are available today, Nov 6.
